Josh Pye
Josh Pye (b. 1990, Birmingham, UK) is a British artist living and working in London.
By re-examining notions of Abstract Expressionism he experiments with action and gesture, void and space, mark making and colour, creating a sensorial experience for the viewer. For Pye, gesture becomes a state of being—reserved and contained or fluid and expansive—while his masterful use of colour interplays between depth and flatness.
Pye uses painting as a tool to explore the meanderings of form and thought. Within his paintings, elements exist that could be seen as stylistic or figural, yet he chooses to keep these forms undefined. Expanding on this, he says, “Essentially, I like the idea that any figure I come up with has its own identity and its own associations allowing the space to move beyond any extension of my thought.”
Pye is a graduate of the Royal Academy Schools in London.
