Spencer Fung(b. 1961, Hong Kong, China) is an architect, designer, and artist based in London.
Engaging with natural materials, Fung insists on maintaining an environemnentally friendly practice by sourcing organic and biodegradable materials, including raw, self-dug clay and natural pigments. For Fung, melted snow or lake water become a mixing medium, and twigs, leaves, or moss a tool to create art. Fung paints using in-the-moment inspiration outdoors, often capturing moments of light and shadow on mountains and lakes, or the leaf and bark details of surrounding trees. These works range from intimate studies to monumental murals. When creating work in his studio, Fung’s practice becomes more introspective than spontaneous.
The rapidly increasing environmental devastation caused by humanity has led a shift in Fung’s recent work, becoming abstract an emotional in response.
Together, these materials, application methods, and subject keep Fung and his practice grounded with nature and it’s energy.
In addition to raw natural materials, Fung also works with graphite, charcoal, Chinese ink, and watercolour.
