The Courtyard Residency Alice Kemp

Artist in Residence: Alice Kemp

The Courtyard Residency | Alice Kemp

We have invited British painter Alice Kemp (b. 1987) to be our first artist in residence taking over our Courtyard Studio at 11 Eccleston Street for a month. Alice focused her residency on producing a new body of work in response to this year’s Belgravia in Bloom theme “The Language of Flowers”, inspired by Belgravia’s garden squares.

The theme of the Residency connects closely with the concepts Alice wants to communicate in her work. She finds inspiration in nature, painting traditionally decorative subjects like plants, flowers, animals and landscapes, yet choosing to juxtapose their beauty and inherent asymmetry. Influenced by the Japanese approach to art where the distance between art, decoration and nature is shorter, she approaches her subjects with a conscious mix of free expression and restraint, minimalism and visual overload.

Alice Kemp is a graduate of Central Saint Martins and University College Falmouth.
